Vision

ManukaMed® was formed with a vision to benefit patients around the world by facilitating the supply of medical grade Manuka honey in the form of well designed, quality products appropriate for medical application.

Supply

Situated in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand but operating throughout the country, our parent company, Watson & Son Ltd, has over 15,000 beehives strategically placed in some of the most remote mono-floral Manuka areas of New Zealand. Our access to this resource and control over the supply chain forms the cornerstone of our company, and sets us apart from other providers of Manuka products.

In order to establish a controlled specification for medical applications it is important that all aspects of production are controlled to a very high standard. The beehives are located in mono-floral regions of Manuka where there is no risk of contamination or dilution of properties. Hygienic hive management, specific harvesting protocols and processing within a state-of-the-art complex are key features of medical honey production.

Due to unique synergies within Manuka honey the potent multiple antibacterial properties of Manuka honey are unlikely to be able to be synthesized in a laboratory. The production and supply of this unique resource is completely reliant on a dedicated team of New Zealand apiarists of which Watson & Son are industry leaders.

Sustainability

ManukaMed® has a guaranteed supply of medical Manuka honey from Watson & Son due to, its ownership of Manuka forest, a long-term relationship building policy with landowners and the development of new Manuka plantations. Together with the New Zealand government the company has also pioneered a school for beekeepers to ensure the essential skills are maintained and improved upon. These strategies will help to ensure long term availability and sustainability for an industry still in its infancy.

Traceability

From beehive to final product ManukaMed® ensures complete traceability and control over production. This level of control is unique amongst honey companies who often buy honey on the open market or contract with multiple suppliers who do not have adequate controls.

From bee to bandage every step in our production chain has been carefully considered to ensure our honey is of the highest standard.

Harvest protocols:

  • Risk assessment of each apiary site
  • All hives located minimum of 10 km from any intensive horticulture
  • All hives have GPS location recorded
  • All batches can be traced to site origin
  • All hives have been inspected by a certified apiarist
  • All bees removed prior to extraction
  • All frames have top/bottom bars scraped and removed
  • All frames have wax cappings removed
  • All frames inspected to ensure absence of pollen cells
  • All frames inspected to ensure absence of brood cells
